Since 1998, Susrut Eye Foundation & Research Centre has worked towards one enduring vision: making quality eye care accessible to people across social and economic backgrounds.
Founded by Dr. Sunil Chandra Bagchi and Dr. Ratish Chandra Paul, Susrut began with a vision to help eradicate avoidable blindness and provide comprehensive eye care to people who needed it most.
What began as a focused eye-care institution has evolved into a broader ecosystem spanning specialist clinical care, community outreach, Vision Centres, research, training and eye banking.

THE SUSRUT JOURNEYIn 1998, Dr. Sunil Chandra Bagchi founded Susrut Eye Foundation & Research Centre with the vision of contributing to the eradication of blindness and making quality eye care accessible irrespective of social or economic barriers.
Dr. Bagchi was an eminent ophthalmologist and philanthropist whose professional journey included training and experience in India and the UK. His philosophy was rooted in clinical excellence combined with compassion and service.
Susrut's journey began with one hospital in Salt Lake. Over the years, the organisation expanded its infrastructure, clinical services and community reach.
The original facility was subsequently complemented by a larger building to accommodate growing patient volumes. Susrut also developed a strong teaching and training component alongside its comprehensive ophthalmic services.
Today, the organisation's work extends beyond hospital-based care into community eye care, outreach, training, research and technology-enabled access.
At Susrut, eye care is not viewed as a single clinical encounter. It is a continuum designed to connect people with the right care at every stage.
Our objective is to bring the right care closer to the people who need it while continuing to strengthen specialist clinical capabilities.

Susrut launches in Kamalgazi, 24 Parganas South. Surgical training for overseas doctors starts in Salt Lake campus.
New hospital launch in Metiabruz. Master of Optometry initiated in Salt Lake.

Salt Lake Phase 3 starts operation.
New hospital launch in Hatibagan. Susrut receives NABH Accreditation for all 3 phases in Salt Lake.
Dental services starts under Susrut Medilife in Salt Lake & Belur. Bachelor of Optometry starts in Salt Lake. NBEMS DO training starts in Salt Lake. Vision Centres all over West Bengal initiated.
